- The lead architect behind the PS5 thought 30FPS would be the staple for this generation.
- He believed ray tracing and 60FPS would be adopted later into the console generation.
- Mark Cerny also explained that PlayStation’s PC ports are rather simple and do not have any complications.
Gaming at higher frame rates has become a staple in the current console generation. While some notable releases have shipped with 30FPS only, 60FPS has become the sweet spot for most studios.
Even the lead PS5 architect has stated that he is surprised by this generation’s nearly universal 60FPS push.
Why it matters: The current hardware is strong enough to push for 60FPS, enabling much smoother gaming. Most games released on the PS5 have come with dedicated fidelity and performance modes.
In an interview with Gamesindustry, Mark Cerny, the lead architect at PlayStation, was asked what surprised him the most about the current console generation. He pointed to the wide adoption of ray tracing and the push towards 60FPS.
Mark Cerny further stated that he thought these elements would become more mainstream later in the generation. He explained that 30FPS games can prioritize more detailed graphics and art.
However, developers are choosing to sacrifice raw fidelity for smoother gameplay this time. Perhaps this is why very few games have a next-gen look today, although there are several exceptions.
The other thing that has been surprising is the push to 60 frames per second.

Mark Cerny agreed that this is indeed good for gamers, but he didn’t see the trend picking up this soon. Many titles launching with ray tracing on consoles also made him happy, which he thought would happen much later.
On the subject of PlayStation’s increasing focus on PC, he said that PC ports have been relatively simple. The only task has been to deal with the optimization issues, for which more RAM or CPUs are required.
However, in general, the ports have been quite easy for Sony. Perhaps this is why Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, and God of War Ragnarok were decided to be released in 2024 with small gaps in between.
