- Dragon Age: The Veilguard is not following the open-world trend.
- BioWare will offer more exploration opportunities than past Dragon Age games.
- However, the gameplay will mostly follow a mission-based structure.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard has received new previews and gameplay today. The latest footage presents a whopping 15 minutes of combat, character interactions, choices, and more.
However, following the gameplay, BioWare has also shared additional details about the RPG. In addition to confirming a 60FPS mode, the team has clarified that Dragon Age: The Veilguard is not an open-world title.
Why it matters: Open-world gaming has become more popular than ever, with RPGs adopting this format to provide more player-curated experiences. BioWare seems to be stepping away from this trend, setting an exciting precedent.
BioWare describes the experience as mission-based instead of open-world. This is interesting since many of the biggest modern RPGs, including The Witcher 3, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Dragon’s Dogma 2, are open-world titles.
The team states that it intends to provide a hand-crafted experience. Where players would wander around and create their own adventures in an open world, BioWare hopes to take them through a carefully curated journey.
We believe that’s how we get the best narrative experience.

Fortunately, fans of open-world RPGs will still find Dragon Age: The Veilguard more fulfilling than past entries.
The game is designed to offer more exploration than anything Dragon Age has done in the past. This approach helps the team strike an ideal balance, making the upcoming RPG more akin to a semi-open-world title.
Other details revealed today include the ability to carry over choices from Dragon Age Inquisition. Even though fans have not revisited this franchise for over a decade, BioWare is keen on giving fans a refresher and adding weight to their choices.
All in all, Dragon Age: The Veilguard sounds like a very carefully made RPG. From everything described in the recent previews, fans are in for a treat once the game finally releases.
