Story Highlight
  • The Elder Scrolls Online has seen great success over the last decade.
  • The game director confirmed it has seen nearly $2 billion in customer spend since its launch.
  • While he didn’t break down the numbers, it looks impressive.

While live service games often find trouble getting success, ZeniMax Online Studios released The Elder Scrolls Online over a decade ago, and the title has seen great success in recent years.

Since the game is celebrating its 10th anniversary, which is coming next week, the game director has confirmed The Elder Scrolls Online has seen nearly $2 billion in customer spend.

Why it matters: Though the director didn’t break down the numbers, they are still massive and not readily achievable.

During a panel at GDC 2024, the game director of The Elder Scrolls Online, Matt Firor, confirmed that the game has seen a significant amount of money players have spent on the game over recent years.

He stated over the decade of operation, the game has seen around $2 billion in customers spend on the game. While he doesn’t break down these numbers, it still looks to be an outstanding achievement for the developers who have worked hard on the game.

The developers also talked about the game’s success at the event, celebrating the milestones they have achieved with the success of The Elder Scrolls Online. The developers started working on the title in 2007.

While the game’s development started in 2007 and was released to only PC in 2014, the game is now available on as many as seven platforms.

It’s great to see a live service game is doing much better, even a decade later, while recent titles like Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League prove that chasing live service game trends doesn’t always end well.

Modern games like Call of Duty have also seen significant criticism as the developers are too accepting of overpriced microtransactions. However, The Elder Scrolls Online has survived for over a decade and is still going strong.

Nonetheless, the game has seen 23 DLC packs released, 42 themed updates, and nine chapter launches over the last decade. The developers deserve great credit for managing the live service game splendidly.
