According to a report, with a special agreement, Intel has made it possible for PC builders such as Maingear to remove part of the chip and install a third-party cooling system directly on the CPU die, all while keeping the original Intel warranty.
Those who enjoy CPU overclocking refer to this procedure as “delidding,” where you need to gently remove the metal lid that sits on the silicon and acts as a heat spreader.
Typically, pre-built PCs don’t come with delided CPUs, but according to Intel’s short-lived new agreement, manufacturers can design custom-cooled systems that maximize the performance of the Intel Core i9-14900KS.
Furthermore, there are existing cooling options available, like the EK Nucleus CR360 Direct-Die AIO. Thus, it would make sense for Intel to introduce a new batch of CPUs for the KS series.
However, a new Intel Core i9-14900KS version is unlikely to be released by Intel. For those interested, doing the delidding manually or through a fellow enthusiast’s help seems to be the best option.
Ultimately, Intel would benefit if it allowed other distributors to delid the processor. The Core i9-14900KS can achieve remarkable results when fully unleashed. However, its limitation means this potential is out of most PC builders’ reach.
Therefore, it does not make a lot of sense to invest in the CPU for now.
