Last of Us Part 2 Remaster Sales 2x Higher Than Part 1 Remake At Launch

Despite The Negative Perception Before Launch!

Story Highlights
  • The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered received a lot of criticism as the game already looked extremely good.
  • Despite the criticism, it seems like the game is selling well.
  • In the UK, the remaster has sold over twice as many copies as 2022’s Part 1 remake.

The Last of Us Part 2 is quickly approaching its third anniversary. A few months before this anniversary, Naughty Dog has released a new remaster to kick off the new year. While The Last of Us Part 2 was an undeniable success, it sold 44% fewer copies than its predecessor.

However, it seems PlayStation’s strategy to remaster the game will help it make up for this difference. According to initial data, The Last of Us Part 2 remastered outsold its predecessor’s remake by 2x in the UK.

Why it matters: There was a lack of positivity for this remaster at the time of the announcement, making these results a pleasant surprise.

This sales data comes from Christopher Dring, who works at Gamesindustry. It is also important to note that while The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is a $10 upgrade for existing owners, these figures do not count upgrades as sales.

Much of the difference likely comes from the bigger PS5 install base today. Compared to 2022, millions of new gamers own a PS5 now, with Sony confirming 50 million units shipped last year.

Meanwhile, The Last of Us Part 1 was released nine years after the original game. Most people had already experienced the story by then, leading to a smaller target audience for day-one sales.

While the latest remaster ships without noticeable graphical upgrades, it adds new content and DualSense support to the game. This makes it the definitive way to experience The Last of Us Part 2 moving forward.

People who have yet to play this critically acclaimed PlayStation release have likely decided to finally jump in, leading to these promising results in the first week since release.

Still, the community has been growing increasingly tired of remasters and re-releases. Games like GTA 5 have drawn criticism for similar tactics, with Rockstar reselling the game for the third continuous console generation.

Naughty Dog fails to see why the remaster was so controversial, claiming it is not for everyone. Whatever the case may be, the game seems to be doing much better than we expected despite the criticism.
