Following a bold revamp and a detailed expansion, the journey of Cyberpunk 2077 has been concluded. With the game reaching the Steam best-seller charts and receiving unanimous praise, CDPR is looking to the future.
The game will not receive any major updates moving forward as CDPR is entirely focused on the future of Cyberpunk and The Witcher. However, the sequel is far from ready.
Codenamed Project Orion, the game will be based on Unreal Engine 5, but it may not carry over all of the DNA from Cyberpunk 2077. According to CDPR, the studio has yet to decide if Project Orion will be a first-person shooter.
Why it matters: CDPR has mainly developed third-person perspective games, and Cyberpunk 2077 was a massive departure for the studio. Returning to the former could allow the team to focus and improve other parts of Project Orion.
During a recent presentation, Paweł Sasko from CDPR discussed the game’s sequel.
He stated that the first-person camera is a defining characteristic of Cyberpunk 2077, and the studio does not regret this decision. Previously, many had expressed doubt about the developer’s choice.
Following the game’s release, fans also wanted to see the studio release an update similar to GTA, allowing players to experience the game through an alternate perspective. However, CDPR stuck to its original vision.
Coming to Project Orion, Pawel Sasko said:
“But for Orion, we’re yet to see.”
Since the sequel is early in development, many decisions are yet to be made. While the first-person perspective proved crucial to Cyberpunk 2077, a different camera and gameplay style could help its sequel craft its own identity.
Following the recent success of the title, CDPR confirmed Cyberpunk 2077 sold over 25 million units, and its only expansion, Phantom Liberty, has sold over 3 million units within the first week of its launch.
This success shows that there is nothing wrong with a first-person perspective, but we believe CDPR would be wise to offer both options for the sequel. A studio like Rockstar Games has already tried this approach.
Multiple options would fulfill the goal of a bigger and better world while adding new gameplay options for more player freedom.
Nonetheless, Cyberpunk 2077 has ensured that Project Orion will be an anticipated title regardless of its gameplay perspective.
