Mortal Kombat 1 Is Terrible on Nintendo Switch, Claims Early User

"It's a stuttering mess!"

Mortal Kombat 1 is less than two weeks away from release. The game marks the return of the Mortal Kombat franchise after four years, bringing new additions like Kameo fighters and a revamped story mode featuring a timeline made by Liu Kang.

NetherRealm Studios has skipped last-generation consoles to harness the power of the PS5 and Xbox Series S|X for the most brutal and advanced version of Mortal Kombat to date. However, the game is also scheduled to be released on the Nintendo Switch.

Copies of the game’s Nintendo Switch version appear to be out in the wild ahead of release, and a user with one such copy claims that Mortal Kombat 1 is terrible on the Nintendo Switch.

Why it matters: Like the other versions, Mortal Kombat 1 is priced at $70, leading to high expectations for NetherRealm Studios’ latest release on the Nintendo platform.

The user has already begun to share information about the game, uploading a screenshot of the Nintendo Switch that shows the game’s entire roster of Kameo characters.

When asked about impressions of Mortal Kombat 1 on the hybrid console, the Redditor said:

“Uploading the terrible switch footage. It’s either going to cause an outrage for $70 or just flop.”

Prior to release, many had already expressed doubts about the fighting game on the hybrid console.

Since NetherRealm Studios had ditched last-generation hardware like the PS4 at a time when many games were still being released on the older consoles, many were surprised that a Nintendo Switch version of the game was announced.

The studio previously brought Mortal Kombat 11 to the Nintendo Switch. However, this port was not developed by NetherRealm Studios and was outsourced to Shiver Entertainment. Like before, the Mortal Kombat 1 port is also being outsourced.

Shiver Entertainment and Saber Interactive are working on the latest Mortal Kombat game for Nintendo platforms, with NetherRealm Studios focused on the main versions for PS5 and Xbox Series S|X.

Mortal Kombat 11 already had its fair share of hiccups on the Nintendo Switch. During intensive cutscenes like Fatal Blows, the game would slow down to a halt. In other areas, it displayed a poor resolution that did little to help the game’s visuals.

As such, Mortal Kombat 1 was never expected to work too well on the Nintendo Switch. NetherRealm Studios has made several strides since the last game, upgrading to a new version of Unreal Engine for the latest fighting game.

All of this has likely culminated in a port that is a bit too ambitious for the Nintendo Switch.

Highlighting other problems, the user said:

“I would avoid this game. It’s a stuttering mess and the frames slow way down in some cutscenes.”

Mortal Kombat 1 also uses the new SSDs in the consoles for a seamless transition to gameplay from the character select screen. However, this does not appear to work well on the Nintendo Switch, with the user claiming:

“When I fought my first opponent, it took about 2 minutes after we locked arms(transition point from character select to battle).”

It should be noted that the game was played in handheld mode on the Nintendo Switch. Some users have also suggested that a day-one patch may address many of these issues.
