Dev Hints New Modern Warfare Series Will Continue For Several Years

"I Would Say We’re Just Getting Started!"

The original Modern Warfare series of Call of Duty released its final game in 2011. Following an eight-year-long gap,  Infinity Ward rebooted the Modern Warfare franchise in 2019.

With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 coming out on November 10 and launching with all 16 maps from the 2009 Call of Duty entry, fans of the series are excited to relive golden memories in a modern game.

Like the original franchise, many thought the upcoming game would mark the end of the rebooted Modern Warfare trilogy. However, Call of Duty’s Narrative Director has recently stated that the franchise is just getting started.

Why it matters: The recent Modern Warfare games have provided a fresh and gritty take on the original characters and their stories. This has made them popular among new and older fans alike.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

During a recent interview with The Washington Post,  the Narrative Director of Call of Duty, Brian Bloom, was asked about his thoughts on the future of Modern Warfare. He stated that character arcs usually progress linearly but can also deviate.

Therefore, characters can continue to evolve and devolve, presenting new opportunities for story-telling. He further said:

“All these things, they offer rich, fertile ground to tell stories, and that’s not going to stop. In fact, I would say we’re just getting started.”

While Infinity Ward pivoted to Call of Duty Ghosts after the original series, Modern Warfare’s newfound success could encourage the studio to move forward with several more entries.

Furthermore, the introduction of Warzone has led to a somewhat interconnected narrative between various Call of Duty franchises, with characters like Imran Zakhaev appearing in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

This could lead to larger crossovers between both Call of Duty IPs. On the other hand, Call of Duty may also continue the Modern Warfare series as a separate entity, much like Treyarch has done with the Black Ops series since 2010.

The last game in the rebooted series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, was a huge success, making over $800 million in three days after release. Seven studios are involved in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, leading to a lot of potential for a worthy follow-up to last year’s release.
