Rog Ally Looks Exciting!

The specifications of the upcoming Asus ROG Ally were leaked when the product appeared at the certification offices. Products not made public are always listed with model names, codes, and other details at the certification offices.

After a product code is achieved, it is relatively easy to keep track of a product, in this case, the Asus ROG Ally, between ASUS headquarters. According to a shipping manifest, the upcoming Asus ROG Ally will come equipped with AMD Ryzen 7 7840U APU and Radeon 780M graphics.

Specifications like the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U APU and Radeon 780M graphics could also be found on other expensive handheld consoles like the AOKZEO AI Pro and GPD Win Max. On the other hand, Asus has listed a custom model of the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U APU and Radeon 780M graphics instead, altered to ASUS specifications.

Furthermore, the product codes for the ROG Ally were already confirmed by ASUS, so it is not that hard to find them on the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) website. According to the FCC listing, the Asus ROG Ally will come in two models, namely RC71L and RC71X.

Currently, there is no information on what the two separate models specify. But it is not unusual for handheld gaming consoles to come in different colors or memory storage configurations. So the two separate models might be pointing toward two models with different specifications besides the APU.

The Ryzen APU mentioned on the shipping manifest of the Asus ROG Ally might also be from pre-release hardware. Ryzen 7 7840U is from the AMD Phoenix lineup, mainly designed for laptops. The chips feature 8 cores and 16 threads with a TDP of 35W to 54W. Though for a handheld console, the power target will be much less.

Asus ROG Ally is expected to run on two modes, including a regular 15W mode and a 35W mode. The console is also expected to perform 50% better than Valve Steam Deck at 15W; at 35W, it is reported to be twice the performance.

Regarding specifications, the upcoming Asus ROG Ally will feature a 7-inch 1920 x 1080 display with a peak brightness of 500 nits and a 120Hz refresh rate. On the hand, the Value Steam Deck uses a 7-inch display with 1280×800 resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate.

The upcoming Asus ROG Ally is an upgrade over the current Valve Steam Deck. But what would matter is how the handheld console competes against its competitors with the same hardware. Aside from that, the price of the Asus ROG Ally would also determine how well the new handheld console will do in the market.

Handheld consoles with the same specifications on the market are currently selling for above $1000. In contrast, ASUS ROG Ally claims to be priced competitively compared to its competitors. However, it remains to be seen if the price is competitive against the Value Steam Deck or the much more expensive sub $1000 handheld consoles.
