The review embargo on the most awaited AMD Ryzen 7800X3D chip was lifted yesterday, followed by many independent reviewers. Among these independent reviewers, SkatterBencher was the first to show his results. His testing methods rely solely on how well the new X3D chip from AMD overclocks.
AMD Ryzen chips based on the X3D technology are not recommended for overclocking and ship with a locked multiplier. But there is still a way to bypass that to speed up the chip. To overclock the AMD Ryzen 7800X3D chip, SkatterBencher used different tools provided on AMD boards, including Curve Optimizer, Precision Boost Overdrive 2, EXPO, and asynchronous ECLK.
The most stable way of overclocking among these options combines ECLK and Prevision Boost Overdrive 2. With the help of these overclocking tools and the EK Quantum custom water cooling kit, SkatterBencher has managed to overclock the AMD Ryzen 7800X3D chip to an astonishing 5.3 GHz in SuperPI one-thread boost test.
Even though SkatterBencher managed a stable overclock of 5.3 GHz on his Ryzen 7800X3D chip, still it’s not something we would recommend doing. Ryzen X3D chips are designed to run at stable locked boost clocks, lower than the non-X3D counterparts. The 3D V-Cache chips on the Ryzen 7800X3D are highly sensitive to heating and voltages and can have a lot of stability issues.
SkatterBencher is now exploring other options and aiming for a stable 5.6 GHz overclocking. Achieving a stable overclock also depends on the silicon quality of the chip, meaning most users might not be able to hit what SkatterBencher has achieved. SkatterBencher also recommends not going past 1.15V while overclocking the Ryzen 7800X3D chip.
