2024 Has Better-Rated Games Than 2023 On Average So Far

Average Critic Score Higher At 81.55!

Story Highlight
  • 2023 ended on a positive note with lots of incredible releases, but it seems 2024 is doing better in the first four months.
  • The difference is small, but 2024 pulls ahead with an average score of 81.55 for its releases.
  • This was made possible by games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Tekken 8.

Although 2023 was fabulous for gamers as it was packed with fun games for everyone, 2024 seems to be a worthy successor.

Disappointments like Suicide Squad and Skull and Bones may suggest otherwise, but 2024 is reportedly doing better than 2023 when comparing the first four months of both years.

Why it matters: Much of 2024 remains a surprise, with games like Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake, Silent Hill 2, and more still to come. Therefore, there is no telling how the average score will evolve by the end of December.

2023 and 2024 Game Average Review Scores
2023 and 2024 Average Review Scores For The Biggest Games

This data comes from Baiisun, who has compiled a concise chart comparing these two years from January to April.

In 2024, 11 games have more than 100 reviews on OpenCritic, while the last year had 16 games with this many reviews. However, of these games, the ones in 2024 came out on top with a better average score of 81.55 compared to last year’s 80.06.

Though this difference is small, it illustrates that the industry’s quality has not decreased. Both years featured remakes like Dead Space and Persona 3 Reload. Meanwhile, sequels like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth ensured existing franchises continued to thrive.

2023 pulled ahead in sheer volume. Around 215 games were launched in a similar period last year compared to 2024’s 160. For accurate results, the titles were also compared across various categories, including those with 20+ reviews, 50+ reviews, and more.

The data suggests that 2024’s biggest games include Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Tekken 8, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, and more. Meanwhile, 2023 offered Hi-Fi Rush, Metroid Prime Remastered, and Resident Evil 4 in a similar period.

2024’s weaker but enjoyable titles include the likes of Rise of the Ronin. However, nearly everything has found a fanbase in the last four months. Moreover, recent releases like Slavic Magic’s Manor Lords have joined the growing list of well-received releases.

We expect future releases like Hellblade 2 and Indiana Jones to be reviewed just as well. There’s also an element of surprise since titles like Helldivers 2 and Palworld have shown that anything can happen in 2024.
