Xbox Further Solidifying Its Stance As A Publisher!

Story Highlight
  • Phil Spencer says Xbox doesn’t want players from other platforms moving to theirs.
  • They want the players to be more invested in their games regardless of the platform.
  • Xbox uses the revenue it generates to invest in more great titles.

Xbox is currently in a peculiar position in the gaming industry right now. On one hand, the company is significantly losing out on console sales, but on the other, it generated over $6 Billion in revenue in Q2 2024, marking its 2nd biggest holiday quarter.

As more players move away from consoles and towards Xbox games, the Xbox boss says that the company isn’t trying to move players from Nintendo and PlayStation to its platform anymore.

Why it matters: In the last couple of years, Microsoft’s intent has become rather clear. It’s leaning more towards publishing than consoles, so it isn’t trying to gain players for the Xbox consoles.

Talking to XboxEra, Phil Spencer was asked about a statement he made during the FTC trial about the revenue that PlayStation generates from Xbox-published games. He said Sony uses the 30% they generate from Xbox games to strengthen its grip over the market.

I’m not trying to move them (PS and Nintendo players) all over to Xbox anymore. People were all so invested in where our games are. Let’s just allow more people to play.

– Phil Spencer

He said that it wasn’t the statement he was supposed to say at that time. Some players prefer other platforms; maybe they like the controller better or just the general ecosystem, so you can’t win them over in any case.

Phil further stated that Xbox doesn’t aim to move players away from other platforms to their own. They want to allow more people to play them, and the 70% revenue Xbox generates from multiplatform games helps them bring more great titles to life.

Of course, Xbox has a solid portfolio of titles lined up for this and the upcoming year. These include the much anticipated Doom: The Dark Ages, Gears 6, new Halo, Perfect Dark, Fable, and more. Most of these are either rumored or confirmed for PlayStation as well.
