Windows 11 Adoption Reaches All-Time High!

Story Highlight
  • Windows 11 is currently installed on approximately 30% of Windows-based systems.
  • The adoption has been hindered by its demanding hardware requirements.
  • With Windows 10 nearing its end of life in 2025, there’s potential for increased adoption of Windows 11.

As Windows 11 approaches its third anniversary of release, the operating system’s popularity appears to be at an all-time high for users. According to one report, Windows 11 is presently installed on about 30% of Windows PCs.

The results might not be too impressive, but they show a significant increase over the past few months when Windows 11 adoption decreased slightly. Given the operating system’s originally unfavorable reaction, the current adaption numbers are encouraging.

Why it matters: This operating system has marked Microsoft’s slowest transition between two Windows iterations, but the latest report shows signs of hope for the future.

Statcounter’s most recent monthly report shows that Windows 11 has a 29.7% market share. On the other hand, Windows 10 still holds a commanding 66.1% share. New operating systems typically get a lot of traction after they are released.

However, celebrating a 30% install base almost three years after the release is not a good sign for Microsoft’s current operating system. Adopting Windows 11 is still quite hard for some systems due to the more demanding requirements, which limit the operating system to machines without TPM, older processors, and a limited amount of RAM.

Furthermore, the operating system is gradually being plagued with advertisements. Microsoft has recently received criticism for showing ads for services like Xbox Game Pass and more.

Additionally, for those who aren’t concerned about AI or Copilot, there isn’t much of a difference between Windows 11 and its predecessor.

Windows 11 is replacing several legacy operating systems, which have been permanently retired. These computers are particularly vulnerable to cyberattacks since they no longer receive updates, especially security patches from Microsoft.

Still, Windows 10 is presently the most widely used Microsoft operating system. On October 14, 2025, this version will reach its end of life, hopefully passing its success over to Microsoft’s latest release.
