- Metaverse gaming allows players to explore, play, and socialize in the virtual 360-degree gaming worlds.
- While Metaverse is a fairly new concept, traditional consoles have been the comfort gaming source for generations.
- It will take years before Metaverse gaming becomes a mainstream gaming concept for a layperson, plus the gears and accessories it requires are comparatively expensive.
“Metaverse” feels like one of those cool buzzwords everyone keeps talking about. Although the concept is insanely new, and the vast majority of the population hasn’t even tried it yet, it is still making rounds in the gaming and tech worlds. So, what is metaverse gaming, and how does it even work?
What Is Metaverse Gaming?
Metaverse merges VR and AR experiences to create highly immersive gaming worlds. Players simply have to wear the required gear, such as the Meta Quest headgear, and grab onto the two controllers. Once you step into the virtual world of Metaverse, you can indulge in 360-degree action-packed gaming, where it feels like the digital world has come to life.
Enabled by an interactive environment where you can virtually touch and explore different aspects of the game, thanks to the haptic feedback technology, you will quickly be unable to distinguish between the real and the digital. It blurs the boundary between the two environments- a concept of Phygital Convergence, allowing you to become a significant part of the gaming environment.
In the 3D virtual environment, you can customize your character and play alongside your friends’ characters. Unlike traditional gaming on consoles or PCs, the metaverse allows players to not only play but also interact, socialize, and even work within immersive virtual worlds.
Metaverse Innovation Or The Legacy Of Consoles?
In 2022, Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite, announced $2 billion in funding to expand into metaverse gaming. According to NASDAQ, Meta has spent $46 billion on the advancement of Metaverse since 2021, indicating that the company has big plans for the concept.
On the other hand, console gaming has always been straightforward. You just need the console and the controllers, and you are ready to go. However, Metaverse gaming is comparatively more expensive. It requires AR/VR headsets, which can only be worn for a limited period before they become painful and uncomfortable.
Unfortunately, Metaverse has limited gaming options in 2024, like Asgard’s Wrath 2. On the other hand, consoles let you explore a vast library of games. Consoles have everything from thrilling action/adventures to cozy games.
Besides, not many people notice that it needs ample physical space so players can move around without hurting themselves on furniture or other obstacles. This isn’t easy to achieve in most living spaces.
What’s My Take?
The world is welcoming tech advances, such as the AI revolution, with open arms and wider acceptance. However, traditional gaming consoles have long been a comfort zone for many generations. For millennials and early Gen Zs like me, transitioning to the Metaverse and ditching consoles might feel like a betrayal of a key part of our childhood
PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo have dominated the gaming industry for decades. Growing up, we have all played on at least one of these consoles and have fond memories attached to it. I remember binge-playing OG games like Ratchet Gladiator and Shrek The Third on my PS2 when it first came out, and the experience still stands out.
Comparatively, the Metaverse concept is still in its baby phase, and I believe it will take a good 8 or 10 years before the world learns about Metaverse gaming and how it operates. Until then, our favorite consoles are here to rule the gaming sessions!
