"Ubisoft Is Violating California's Consumer Protection Laws"

Story Highlight
  • Ubisoft shut down The Crew’s servers in March 2024 due to licensing issues.
  • Due to that, the company was hit with a lawsuit just recently.
  • Two California gamers have sued the gaming giant for shutting down The Crew servers and are looking to make it a class action lawsuit.

Ubisoft, one of the biggest gaming companies, has been under a lot of pressure lately. The gaming giant hasn’t been able to produce quality titles for a long time now.

It did release a compelling game, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, but it didn’t attract massive sales, causing the developer behind it to close. The company also faced a lot of losses due to the failure of Star Wars Outlaws, which caused the delay of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

It was even called out for breaking the law with its mentorship program, and now it is being sued over shutting down The Crew’s servers.

Why it matters: Ubisoft can’t seem to catch a break, as a disaster is waiting to happen at every turn. Fans wish for the company’s closure, which could happen if the Assassin’s Creed Shadows fails.

Two California Gamers Are Suing Ubisoft For Violating California’s Consumer Protection Laws

Two California gamers are suing Ubisoft in a class action lawsuit over the shutdown of The Crew’s servers. The Crew was released in 2014, and its servers were shut down after a decade in March 2024 due to licensing issues.

After the servers were shut down, the game was in a completely unplayable condition as it didn’t have an offline mode. Upon the shutdown, Ubisoft refunded those who bought The Crew recently, but many players weren’t able to get the refund, given that the game is one decade old.

Imagine you buy a pinball machine, and years later, you enter your den to go play it, only to discover that all the paddles are missing, the pinball and bumpers are gone, and the monitor that proudly displayed your unassailable high score is removed.

The lawsuit further states that The Crew’s shutdown is like the Pinball manufacturer coming into your home and removing the insides of the machine along with your ability to play the game ‘you bought and owned.’

As per the lawyers, Ubisoft is violating California’s consumer protection laws. Both of the plaintiffs who initiated the lawsuit bought the game in 2018 and 2020, respectively. You should also note that if this lawsuit is approved as a class action, then many more players are likely to get involved.
