Steam Sets Yet Another Record, Generates $16.2 Billion In Sales This Year

Game Revenue On Steam Has Grown Almost Continuously Over The Last Decade!

Story Highlight
  • Steam has set yet another unprecedented record by generating $16.2 billion in game sales this year.
  • The revenue is 5.7% higher than last year, despite there being over a month remaining.
  • Valve itself has made over $4 billion this year from game commissions on Steam and its own titles.

Steam has continued to grow since its creation decades ago, doubling its user base in the last 5 years by setting a new 41 million concurrent users peak. The store has continued to set multiple records over the years, consistently breaking them by hitting new milestones.

Now, the platform has shattered yet another record that no one expected. It has generated over $16.2 billion in game sales this year, which includes both free-to-play and premium games across all genres.

Why it matters: Steam hitting sales records over the years shows that the store continues to dominate the industry. No one has even come close to competing with the giant platform so far.

The data comes from the reliable firm Alinea Analytics, estimating that Steam generated 5.7% more sales compared to last year. Keep in mind that over a month remains before 2025 ends, so the revenue might climb much higher in the remaining weeks.

The chart also shows an interesting pattern; Steam sales have climbed consistently over the last decade, except for a single outlier. It’s unclear whether the sales will keep increasing YoY or hit a ceiling in the future.

The analysts also reveal that Valve made over $4 billion this year from game commissions on Steam and its own offerings.

On the flip side, the 2025 Steam data also showed that 40% of these games failed to make even $100.

While many are happy with this milestone, recent Steam research also showed that many indie games have a low wishlist-to-sale ratio. A survey also concluded that 72% of developers think the store has a monopoly on games, forcing them onto other storefronts.

Steam users are also concerned about the store’s fate after Gabe Newell. Saints Row lead developer Chris Stockman claimed that a company like Microsoft buying Steam would be a death spiral.
