- Star Citizen is closing in on $1 billion in crowdfunding, but still has no release window.
- The title’s single-player campaign, Squadron 42, is slated to have an obscure 2026 release.
- Originally announced in 2012, Star Citizen has been in development for 13 years.
Being developed by Cloud Imperium Games, Star Citizen is one of the gaming industry’s most interesting mysteries. Announced in 2012 as a crowd-funded project, the title is still just in its alpha state, but the funding has gone colossal.
Star Citizen has currently accumulated almost $900 million in crowdfunding and is on its way to a $1 billion, which is huge for something you don’t even have a release window for. However, its single-player campaign could be close.
Why it matters: The game has been available in a playable alpha state for quite a while now, but it is so buggy and problematic that it is still expected to take a lot of time to materialize into its final version.

As of today, Star Citizen is officially at almost $900 million in crowdfunding. While the full game’s release is still a question, its single-player campaign, Squadron 42, is said to have a tentative release window of 2026.
That too might be under jeopardy as the game’s director, who promised the 2026 release, recently left the studio. So, overall, the development is as much of a mystery today as it was over a decade ago.

Fans were thrilled when they heard about the vision for the game at GDC 2012. The concept was truly futuristic for its time, and fans also trusted Chris Roberts, creator of Wing Commander, so they funded generously.
Over the years, the game’s scope has multiplied a lot. It is currently said to have over 900 developers working on it. Still, the full release window remains a mystery even if the single-player campaign comes out next year.
