Silent Hill 2 Remake is A Strong GOTY Contender

Expert Verified By

Bloober Team has done an excellent job with the Silent Hill 2 remake. It manages to keep the same 20-year-old vibe with better controls, which is always welcome.

Story Highlight
  • Silent Hill 2 has had a pretty good launch, with overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam.
  • Having played the game already, I think it is a solid GOTY contender.
  • The game features remarkable visuals, environment, and puzzles.
  • It is crazy how the Bloober Team improved this game in such a short time.

Silent Hill 2 Remake was recently released, and it arguably managed to capture the essence of that over-twenty-year-old game. It has some issues, but overall, it delivers a solid experience that every survival horror enthusiast should witness.

Having played the remake completely once, I have got to say that it blew me away. Bloober Team has done an excellent job with it and deserves praise. Due to that, I think this, despite being a remake, is a strong GOTY contender.

Why it matters: Resident Evil 4 Remake was nominated for the Game of The Year Award last year, so it shouldn’t be impossible for the Silent Hill 2 remake to be nominated.

From Horrible To Amazing – The Bloober Team Delivered

I 100% agree that this remake looked absolutely horrible when revealed. The environment, movement, combat, voice acting, character designs, and almost everything else looked dreadful. I hated this game and had no expectations at all.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about just go and watch the first few reveals. The gameplay and the first trailer reveal that the game is in a sorry state and should never be released like that. Having lost all hope, I honestly didn’t think the Bloober Team was competent enough to improve it.

However, I couldn’t be more wrong about that, as I just looked at the difference between the reveal and launch trailers. You don’t even have to look at the trailer as if you have played the game, and you would know what I am talking about.

The developer implemented the fans’ feedback and improved the remake by a lot in such a short period of time. I was genuinely shocked to my core and, of course, really happy. Having played one playthrough my experience was quite good

First of all, the visuals and the environment are as appealing as possible. Sure, you get a bit of stutter now and then, but the game is just so good to look at. It might have even better visuals than Alan Wake 2, and I still think the latter is the better game overall.

Great Visuals Poor Character Movement

Of course, Silent Hill 2 Remake isn’t a perfect game. It has some flaws, and they should have been obvious. The game has great visuals, an environment, and puzzles. However, I didn’t really enjoy the character movement that much.

The combat and character movement felt a little clunky to me, but the good thing is that it doesn’t mess up your experience that much. It is just that combat has become one of the game’s core parts, so it being clunky is a red flag, even if it is a minor one.

I also didn’t really like how Bloober Team changed Angela’s and Maria’s character design. The body proportions seem so off, and Maria’s spookiness is just not there. Those who have played the original game would know what I mean.

However, despite these issues, I think Silent Hill 2 is a solid GOTY contender and should be nominated. Now, I don’t think that it is the best game released this year, as that spot has already been taken by Black Myth: Wukong for me, but I would like to see this survival horror game in the same category.

I’m Sorry, Bloober Team

I would like to apologize to the Bloober Team behind this amazing third-person survival horror game. I didn’t think the developer would be able to pull it off, but it did, and it makes me so glad.

If you are a survival horror fan and enjoyed Alan Wake 2, I highly recommend that you try this game. Also, remember that the puzzles will mess with your brain

To be honest, solving puzzles was the part where I had the most fun playing this game. You just have to do so much in order to get a simple item that would unlock a door, where you would have to find more items to unlock more areas so you could actually find the items you need to solve the puzzle.

Not only that but after finding the required items, you would have to solve another mystery. The coin puzzle fits this narrative perfectly; for me, it was the best puzzle. The story is also pretty fascinating and really, really blows your mind.

This remake has performed pretty well on Steam and has overwhelmingly positive reviews. Konami has made a comeback, and I hope the Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake will be just as good, if not better.
