Sony Says PS5 Sales Are Key Performance Indicators Despite Claims That It Doesn’t Care About Hardware

PS5 Sales Are Still A Huge Business Focal Point!

Story Highlight
  • Despite criticism that it’s neglecting hardware, Sony still considers PS5 sales important.
  • It says that, along with MAUs, PS5 sales are also a key performance indicator for them.
  • The console has become a standard for many and has surpassed 80 million units sold.

PlayStation 5 released at a time when the world was going through a huge pandemic therefore global chip shortage. This resulted in less availability at that time, but the sales have caught up and are starting to look really strong now.

It was also claimed that despite decent numbers, Sony doesn’t really care about hardware sales anymore; instead, it is now all about MAUs. However, in its latest report, Sony says PS5 sales are still a key performance indicator for them.

Why it matters: When Sony’s new CFO took over, he clearly indicated that the old model of selling more consoles isn’t financially feasible anymore; however, it seems that the sales are still quite important for the company.

Sony says PS5 sales along with MAUs are major performance indicators

Recently, it was reported that the PS5 Pro is the only variant that is profitable at the moment. Based on this, Sony took a drastic turn with a higher focus on live service games to generate as much profit as possible from software.

Therefore, MAU would be the bigger focus for the company. Sony has now also started porting games to PC and has even released Helldivers 2 on Xbox, in an effort to sell more software and increase audience engagement.

PS5 Pro Vs PS5 Slim
The PS5 recently crossed over 80 million units sold

However, despite this, the PS5 sales remain a core value for the company, and it states that it is a key performance indicator. The console recently crossed 80 million sales as well, very close to what the PS4 had in a similar time frame.

So, despite so much criticism that Sony doesn’t care about hardware sales anymore, the company still clearly considers it a focal business point. It makes sense, too, considering the PS5 has become the standard console for most people.
