- FSR 4 has been dubbed superior to DLSS 3 and PSSR.
- Lead PS5 Pro architect Mark Cerny has also acknowledged FSR 4 looks better and states it will be implemented across the console next year.
- Both Sony and AMD worked closely on the new upscaling, achieving exceptional results.
FSR 4 has been a much-welcome addition to AMD’s PC gaming offerings this year. Built on the foundations of machine learning, the new upscaling technology surpasses both DLSS 3 and PSSR.
This was surprising, especially considering PlayStation’s intentions to position PSSR as the biggest selling point of the PS5 Pro. Following some disappointment over the PS5 Pro’s in-house upscaler, Sony has finally shared an update. As per the console’s lead architect, the PS5 Pro will receive FSR 4 support next year.
Why it matters: AMD previously confirmed that FSR 4’s solid results were made possible due to a collaboration with Sony. It makes sense, then, that PlayStation will also benefit from these results.
Speaking to Digital Foundry, Mark Cerny revealed that PlayStation is currently working with developers to implement PSSR across as many games as possible.
However, the gaming giant is already planning more exciting things for 2026. The next year will see the PS5 Pro receiving something “very similar to FSR 4’s upscaler,” marking what he calls “the next evolution of PSSR.”
Mark Cerny also praised AMD and Sony’s work on FSR 4, acknowledging that it produces better-looking images than PSSR’s current version. One may wonder, then, why the PS5 Pro launched without FSR 4 support. As per the lead architect, this decision was made due to time constraints.
Our target is to have something very similar to FSR 4’s upscaler on PS5 Pro for 2026.
-Mark Cerny
AMD and Sony’s efforts will likely result in developers quickly implementing the new technologies in their games. This news comes at the perfect time, with ambitious titles like Death Stranding 2 and GTA 6 promising to push visual boundaries in the coming years.
