Consoles have struggled to grow their audiences beyond a certain threshold for a long time now. Xbox was quick to notice this stagnation and has already shifted its strategy to release exclusives across other platforms.

Now, Ori and the Blind Forest director says he believes PlayStation will also soon follow in Xbox’s footsteps and adopt a multiplatform strategy in no time.

Why it matters: The words of the Ori director further highlight the shifting landscape in the console space, where many notable figures have recently argued that Sony will have to adopt a multiplatform strategy to survive.

Taking to Twitter to address console warring controversies, Thomas Mahler says Xbox is already on the right track. He thinks it won’t be long before Sony follows the same strategy since it makes no sense to stick to exclusivity and limit your audience.

This debate has also been discussed by notable insiders, such as Jason Schreier, who said console audiences are not growing fast enough to justify exclusivity. Jason also argues that PlayStation will get closer and closer to the multiplatform approach.

Regardless, Thomas thinks the price of entry in the console market is too high to convince new gamers to buy a ‘$500 box’ just to play their favorite game.

An analyst also predicts that Xbox’s multiplatform strategy points to a promising future.

Sony has also started making moves towards adopting a multiplatform approach—albeit at a much slower pace. The company plans to release live service entries on PC while keeping its cinematic first-party titles on PlayStation for a limited time.
