We are currently in the midst of a global tech crisis. PC components have never been so expensive, and it’s getting worse in every sense of the word. For now, the primary affectee is memory, but in the future, storage demand could surge as well.
Nvidia introduced its 2nd generation of Vera Ruben AI systems at CES, which are projected to consume 1,152 TB of storage per server and 115.2 million TB by 2027, potentially triggering a situation similar to the memory shortage.
Why it matters: Storage prices have already somewhat increased during the AI boom, and according to this projection, the prices could skyrocket within this and the next year, pushing even storage beyond the budgets of regular consumers.
Citi has projected that the Rubin servers could take up a good chunk of global storage by next year, accounting for almost 9.3% of the global demand. With the NAND supply already an issue, this could worsen much more.
For context, the Vera Ruben server is a bit different from its previous generation. Previously, the data was kept on HBM modules, but now that the data requirements are super high, they need SSDs for storage.
According to the analysis, there will be 30,000 Vera Rubin shipments in 2026, which will increase to 100,000 by 2027, driven by Nvidia’s ICMS. Just this year, the global storage demand by Ruben systems could account for 2.8% of the entire world.
So, if anyone is looking to build their first PC, or just looking to upgrade to higher capacity storage, and waiting for the prices to come down, that unfortunately isn’t happening. At least for the next 2 years, the high prices will persist.
