According to rumors, the likes of Sony and Paramount were among the frontrunners for an acquisition, but it seems a different contender has won the bidding war. In a new update, Netflix has confirmed that it has now acquired Warner Bros. Discovery.
Why it matters: Consolidation within the entertainment industry has become quite common, with this latest example highlighting yet another major buyout that could significantly impact things moving forward.
The latest deal is worth a whopping $82.7 billion and will see Netflix acquiring all the IPs under Warner Bros. Discovery. These include films, television, and other properties owned by the studio.
According to Netflix, this deal will combine the best of the two giants, making for world-class storytelling in the future, revolving around IPs like Game of Thrones, the DC Universe, and more.
Although the official announcement does not mention Warner Bros. Discovery’s gaming division, it seems safe to expect the likes of Mortal Kombat and Hogwarts Legacy to be owned by Netflix moving forward.
Moreover, internal teams like Rocksteady and NetherRealm should now fall under the Netflix umbrella.
Because Netflix hasn’t been too successful in its gaming endeavors, it will be interesting to see whether this deal will have a significant impact on Warner Bros. Discovery’s gaming division.
