Mortal Kombat Desperately Needs More Spin-Offs

Expert Verified By

The Mortal Kombat franchise has been around for quite some time, but its lack of spin-offs is potentially hurting its growth.

Story Highlight
  • Mortal Kombat has been one of the most popular video game franchises ever, yet it lacks spin-offs.
  • I believe that overlooking spin-offs in the franchise is a missed opportunity for the developers.
  • Given Mortal Kombat’s rich lore, spin-offs could be highly successful if executed effectively.

Mortal Kombat remains one of the longest-running video game franchises, continuing to thrive with each new release. Spin-offs are typically common for franchises as old as Mortal Kombat, but unfortunately, that’s not the case here.

The last truly recognized Mortal Kombat spin-off was Shaolin Monks, released in 2005, and since then, there hasn’t been much progress in developing spin-offs for the series.

I believe the developers are missing a big opportunity by neglecting spin-offs, especially since Mortal Kombat provides an ideal foundation for them, given its vast array of rich characters.

Why it matters: Spin-off games offer a valuable opportunity to experiment with the franchise and enrich the overall lore by exploring character backstories or discovering new possibilities.

There’s Unlimited Potential

Mortal Kombat Is One Of The Biggest Fighting Video Game Franchises In History

As mentioned, Mortal Kombat has a vast roster of characters that many fans, myself included, would love to learn more about. There are specific rivalries and friendships within the game that would benefit from having a more detailed backstory.

Liu Kang and Kung Lao, Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, as well as Scorpion and Sub-Zero in their later years, are just a few examples of strong friendships in the game that developers could explore further in potential spin-offs.

Additionally, the Mortal Kombat universe features iconic rivalries, such as Raiden and Shao Kahn, Mileena and Kitana, and Scorpion and Sub-Zero in their early years, would also make up for some really strong spin-off titles.

Spin-offs focusing on these friendships or rivalries, where we learn more about what shaped their relationships, could allow developers to help players better understand the characters on a deeper level.

What I’m suggesting is that there are numerous possibilities for spin-offs within the Mortal Kombat franchise, and the developers are missing out on further expanding the franchise’s success.

With the successful launch of Mortal Kombat 1 and the franchise being more popular than ever, now would be an ideal time for a spin-off, potentially drawing even more interest to the series.

The Is Some Hope

There hasn’t been any official announcement regarding a future spin-off, but NetherRealm Studios and even Ed Boon, the creator of Mortal Kombat, suggested that if a spin-off were developed, it would be centred around Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

I believe a spin-off focused on Scorpion and Sub-Zero makes perfect sense, as these two have been integral to Mortal Kombat since its inception, and the evolution of their rivalry into a friendship is something we need to learn more about.

However, I wouldn’t want spin-offs to stop there. The franchise has far too many characters and a rich history to overlook spin-off opportunities, and it has been a long time since I have put my hands on a proper Mortal Kombat spin-off.

While the future of Mortal Kombat spin-offs isn’t entirely bleak, there have been no official announcements regarding a spin-off currently in development within the Mortal Kombat franchise.

I hope we eventually get to explore the Mortal Kombat universe further through spin-offs, allowing the developers to experiment and potentially elevate the franchise to new heights.
