The gaming industry has been booming in the past few years, with the most notable jump during the pandemic era. PC gaming has been in the lead for generating the most revenue.

Now, a new report has revealed that 58% of PC gaming revenue came from microtransactions alone. The revenue generated from microtransactions amounts to a whopping $24.4 billion.

Why it matters: Microtransactions have been plaguing the gaming industry. However, with most of the revenue coming from the money used in-game, it’s no wonder publishers continue pushing in-game purchases.

A new report from Newzoo reveals that the titles leading these microtransactions are Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Roblox, and Fortnite. Moreover, the overall PC gaming revenue increased by 1.4% compared to the previous year.

Additionally, the report reveals an increase in DLC revenue for PC, which accounts for $5.3 billion, an increase of 0.8% from last time. Elden Ring Shadow of The Erdtree and Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred contributed to this boost.

However, the gaming revenue did fall in one aspect. 2024 saw a 2.6% drop in the premium category over last year.

Overall, PC gaming revenue saw a minor boost of 0.1% over the past year and is expected to rise by a further 1.61% in 2025.

The PC gaming market is made up of almost a billion players today. With live-service games leading in microtransactions and playtime, it’s no surprise that developers keep pushing the model.

One out of three AAA developers is currently working on a live-service title despite the genre’s massive decline. Gaming giants like Ubisoft and PlayStation are still prevalent in making live-service games despite the setbacks endured from doing so.
