- Mass Effect director Casey Hudson’s new studio, Humanoid Origin, has been shut down after only three years.
- The studio was unable to secure enough funding for its upcoming AAA multi-platform sci-fi project.
- Humanoid Origin was unable to release a single game in its short lifespan.
Having new gaming studios in the industry is always good for innovation and preserving and nurturing budding talents. However, a new trend has become prevalent where big shots of huge gaming companies create their own studios, only for them to close before releasing anything significant. A studio helmed by BioWare’s general manager and Mass Effect director has now met a similar fate.
Casey Hudson started his own studio, Humanoid Origin, in 2021 after leaving his 20-year BioWare career behind. However, it has closed down in only three years without releasing a single game.
Why it matters: BioWare veteran’s Humanoid Origin shutting down without releasing a single game highlights a new depressing trend in the gaming industry, where new gaming studios are often closed in their first few years.
Taking to LinkedIn, the former BioWare veteran explained that Humanoid Origin was unable to secure enough funding to keep his studio running. The company was working on an AAA multi-platform title ‘focused on character-driven narrative in an all-new science fiction universe.’
Despite efforts to shield the studio from broader challenges in the industry, an unexpected shortfall of funding left us unable to sustain operations.
Now, the entire studio team has been laid off, and Casey Hudson is trying to support them in their transition to new employment.
All in all, the community’s reaction has been quite supportive towards the laid-off devs, with other notable figures already offering positions in their own studios. However, gamers who were looking forward to the sci-fi AAA title were also bummed out.
Do you think Casey Hudson’s newly defunct studio would have been able to create titles to rival the likes of the Mass Effect trilogy? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the official Tech4Gamers forum.
