Game Looks To Follow A Semi-Linear Approach!

Story Highlight
  • New gameplay footage for Mafia The Old Country has been revealed.
  • The game appears to be semi-linear, with a few explorable areas for players.
  • Players can approach the game with stealth or go guns blazing, but combat looks fun nonetheless.

Hangar Games has taken a different direction with the upcoming Mafia game by ditching the open-world model and adopting a linear approach, thereby avoiding the bloated and open-world model that Mafia 3 was criticised for.

Mafia The Old Country, the fourth mainline entry in the series, will explore the roots of how the Mafia came into being from the underworld of Sicily. Ahead of its August 8th release, brand-new gameplay footage for the title has been released, focusing mainly on the game’s stealth and action sequences.

Why it matters: Being the first new mainline release in almost a decade, Mafia The Old Country is one of 2025’s most ambitious releases. This gameplay footage further increases the game’s hype ahead of launch.

The exclusive 9-minute gameplay footage by IGN is taken from the 5th chapter of the game titled “Villa.” Without focusing too much on the plot, this mission centres on the lead character, Enzo, being tasked with attacking enemy territory to send a message.

The gameplay also reveals that the protagonist’s own Crew assigns the mission from their Villa. From there, players can choose their own weapon and drive off to the objective, hinting at a semi-linear model.

The visuals look amazing, and Unreal Engine 5’s capabilities do shine here. Players have either the choice to move with stealth or go guns blazing. The stealth sequences bear a resemblance to those in Uncharted games, and the overall aesthetic matches that of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Mafia: The Old Country excels at being a typical action-adventure game, with a strong emphasis on narrative, which will be the key to the game’s success. Most of the game is also rebuilt on Mafia Remake’s assets, which explains the lower $50 price tag.
