- The indie flick is expected to reach 5 million sales soon.
If 2025 wasn’t packed enough, Hollow Knight Silksong has made this fantastic year for gaming even more saturated. The Team Cherry game has exceeded expectations, with players feeling the $20 price tag was too low for a game of this quality.
The indie metroidvania reached 5 million players in three days, a milestone that even AAA games fail to reach nowadays. Now, the total sales for the game have now exceeded an impressive 4.2 million units.
Why This Matters: Indie gaming getting such a sales milestone is a big win for the industry, as it’s the only creative outlet that is innovating the genre on a consistent basis.
According to a sales estimate by GameDiscoverCo, Hollow Knight: Silksong has now sold over 4.2 million copies around the globe. The indie game has been purchased by a whopping 3.2 million users on Steam alone, while the PlayStation and Nintendo versions have also sold 500,000 copies each.
On Xbox, the title was available for Game Pass users; hence, no sales figures have been provided for the console. However, a sizeable 1.5 million players downloaded and played the game via the subscription service, taking the overall player count even higher.
The success of Hollow Knight: Silksong has also motivated the original to improve, with the game experiencing a 600% increase in players.
Hollow Knight: Silksong’s success is a big win for the indie industry, but it hasn’t come easy. The game has 2x the negative reviews of the original on Steam, and also received heat for its brutal difficulty.
Due to its massive hype, fans also fell for scams that offered the game for free, adding another aspect to the controversy. But, with the title still among the top 10 sellers on Steam, all is going well for Team Cherry and co.
