Hollow Knight Has Seen Over 600% Boost In Player Count Since Silksong’s Reveal

Reached An All-Time Peak of 70K!

Story Highlight
  • Hollow Knight, released over eight years ago, has seen a massive resurgence in players.
  • Fueled by the hype of its sequel, Silksong, the game hit a new all-time peak of 70,000 players.
  • This marks a staggering 600% increase in player count compared to its numbers before Silksong’s reveal.

Hollow Knight was released back in 2017, and while it received critical acclaim, it didn’t initially attract a massive player base. At launch, its peak concurrent players on Steam were just around 2,000. Over time, however, the game slowly built momentum and eventually reached a new high of over 20,000 players in 2022.

Despite its slow start, anticipation for its sequel, Silksong, has been immense, even though details about the game remained scarce for years.

That silence finally broke during Gamescom, and the impact was immediate. Off the back of the reveal, Hollow Knight’s player count skyrocketed, climbing to new heights with more than a 600% increase in concurrent players compared to its pre-reveal numbers.

Why it matters: The hype surrounding a sequel can sometimes cause a surge in the player count of earlier entries in the series, but such significant increases are rare.

As shown in the image above, Hollow Knight recently hit a new all-time peak of over 70,000 concurrent players. This is remarkable, considering its previous peak before the reveal of Silksong was just above 20,000.

Before Gamescom, the game’s player count hovered around 9,000, meaning the jump of more than 60,000 players represents an increase of over 600%, a surge that highlights just how much anticipation the sequel has generated.

While surprising, the hype surrounding Hollow Knight: Silksong is not something to underestimate. Several games originally scheduled to launch around its release window have even been delayed, showing just how much other developers respect, and perhaps fear, the attention this sequel commands.

Despite all the excitement, not much new has been revealed about the game itself. The demo shown at Gamescom was the same one previously showcased at E3 2019. Even the price has yet to be officially announced, but leaks suggest it will retail at $20. Hollow Knight: Silksong is currently set to release on September 4, 2025.
