Helldivers 2 Studio Developing A Roguelite Mode That Fundamentally ‘Changes The Game’

The New Roguelite Mode Is Already The Talk Of The Town!

Story Highlight
  • The Helldivers 2 studio is working on a roguelite mode prototype, as the creative director confirmed.
  • The mode will fundamentally change the game’s structure, suggesting an out-of-the-box approach.
  • Development of the roguelite mode may take a long time before we hear or see anything else about it.

Helldivers 2 continues to retain an incredibly large player base despite launching early last year, a part of which can be attributed to Arrowhead’s decision to bring the game to PC and its work on major updates and unique changes since release.

However, the game might arguably get its biggest change and update in the future. Helldivers 2 creative director Johan Pilestedt confirms that a new roguelite mode is in development, expected to fundamentally change the gameplay loop from what we’re familiar with.

Why it matters: Helldivers 2 is already one of the most popular live-service entries, but the new roguelite mode could bring a massive resurgence of new and old players to the experience. Many are already extremely excited about the new mode.

Helldivers 2 Roguelite mode
Helldivers 2 creative director confirms Arrowhead is developing a roguelite mode prototype.

Johan confirmed the unexpected tidbit on Twitter while answering a fan’s query about a roguelike/endless mode. This announcement also confirms that Arrowhead is still focused on coming up with unique gameplay mechanics for Helldivers 2.

The exact details of this roguelite mode are currently unclear since the director didn’t clarify whether we would fight waves of enemies or have to complete repeated objectives on the same map. It could be a single-player mode or co-op in nature for all we know yet.

We might have to defeat an increasingly difficult wave of enemies by buying stratagems, managing resources, and surviving for as long as possible. It might be something else entirely—imagine having to deploy Helldiver teams on a map to deal with encroaching enemies.

Helldivers 2 X Halo Crossover
Helldivers 2 recently had a successful crossover with the Halo franchise.

The roguelite mode is currently just a prototype at the moment. It could take years to be developed or may get shelved indefinitely in the worst-case scenario.

On a side note, the Arrowhead team is also working on a self-funded new action IP in Unreal Engine.

Do you think Helldivers 2 will see another huge resurgence in players if the roguelite mode comes out in the future? Are you looking forward to playing it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
