Following Xbox’s recent shift, most of its hallmark titles have moved to the PS5. Recent reports also pointed to an impending shift for Halo, with Microsoft preparing a third-party remake of the very first title in the series.
These rumors were followed by teasers of an announcement at the Halo World Championship, and sure enough, Halo Combat Evolved has now been officially revealed at the event.
Why it matters: The first Halo title became legendary for revolutionizing first-person shooters on consoles. This experience is set to receive a makeover with the remake.
Dubbed Halo: Campaign Evolved, the remake completely revamps the original Halo’s single-player experience with Unreal Engine 5.
According to the developers, the game is set to launch next year across all platforms, including Xbox Series S|X, PC, and PS5. The game will also include four-player online co-op, expanding on the original’s two-player split-screen co-op.
As the name suggests, Halo: Campaign Evolved skips the multiplayer component in favor of the campaign. However, the game is set to ship with three new prequel missions to expand on the narrative of Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson.
Elsewhere, Xbox has shared various screenshots of the title and a full 13-minute gameplay segment. The gaming giant also notes that the game is still a work-in-progress.
Nonetheless, Halo is now set to arrive on PlayStation for the first time in over two decades. This is a monumental moment for both the series and console gaming since Master Chief has always been Xbox’s mascot.
