Story Highlight
  • Take-Two CEO confirms that GTA 6 won’t be using Generative AI in development.
  • He doesn’t view the technology as a way to make great entertainment.
  • Strauss emphasized that everything they’ve made with GTA 6 is being handcrafted.

Generative AI has been a hot topic, with many game developers believing its adoption is the path forward for the industry. At the same time, there are many who reprimand such a usage and still rely on passion and creativity for game development.

Fortunately, Rockstar Games is one of those few studios that share the view that Generative AI isn’t the solution to make video games

Why it matters: Generative AI sucks the life out of video games and lacks creativity and innovation, since models are trained on already existing work, essentially making it a theft of art.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Take-Two CEO talked about the usage of Generative AI in video games, admitting that it improves efficiency and cost measures. However, he doesn’t view it as a merit.

That said, do I think tools by themselves create great entertainment properties? No, — e. Specifically with regards to GTA 6, Generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building.

He continued to add that everything Rockstar has built with GTA 6 is handcrafted from top to bottom. Further on the topic of Generative AI, he doesn’t believe that the tech will create good entertainment value even in the future.

However, Strauss did state that they’ve been using procedural generation and artificial intelligence since the beginning, and what differentiates that from Generation AI is that it is used for decision making and patterns, necessary for NPCs, and how a world typically operates in a video game, compared to the latter, which is used to create uninspiring content.

In other news, Take-Two has confirmed that its on-track with GTA 6’s current release date planned for November 19th, 2026. Marketing for the game is expected to begin in the summertime, and it will be unlike anything we’ve ever seen, as the parent company puts it.
