- Google’s AI chatbox Gemini recently responded quite inappropriately to a user, telling them to “please die.”
- The AI responded inappropriately to a serious query and has since come under fire online.
- Google has responded to this situation by saying that steps are being taken to prevent this outcome from happening again.
Whether we like it or not, AI has become an essential part of our lives in the past couple of years. Resources like ChatGPT and AI art are in rampant use globally, both by the average person and mega corporations like Meta and Google.
We have all heard stories and watched movies about the AI uprising, but this fear hasn’t really materialized in the modern world. However, a recent response from Google’s AI chatbot Gemini showcases that this technology can go off script, especially when telling humans that they are a waste of resources and need to die.
Why This Matters: The fear of Artificial Intelligence has been a major presence in pop culture and this small incident shows that if we don’t keep this resource under control, it may lead to consequences over time.
This debacle stems from a user asking Google’s AI chatbox about the problems older people face with respect to money and other resources. After the initial prompt, the user kept asking Gemini repetitive questions, going against the answers it was giving as if the purpose was to make the AI explode.
After the 16th question, Gemini gave a startling response to the user, saying that they are a waste of resources, a burden on society, and not special at all, requesting them to “please die.” Naturally, this response has scrutinised Gemini and Google, even though some people have found it funny.
On the Reddit thread for this conversation, Google posted an official response, saying that such AI models encapsulate a large language algorithm that can give nonsensical responses and that the company is taking steps to prevent this from happening again.
The morality of AI is something that has become a perpetual topic of debate around the globe, and it is safe to say this incident is not helping Google gain any more AI sympathizers.
