Star Wars Outlaws is the next big release from Ubisoft. As the game draws closer to its August release, it faces an uphill battle after mixed previews and criticism for unpolished gameplay.

Ubisoft has also confirmed that it won’t be delaying the title. Fortunately, the latest round of previews is much more encouraging. In addition to other details, the team confirms that Ghost of Tsushima directly inspired this open world.

Why it matters: Although Ghost of Tsushima was released over four years ago, the game is still being praised by many developers, making this a great inspiration for Massive Entertainment.

Ghost of Tsushima Remains One of The Most Beloved PlayStation Exclusives

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, creative director Julian Gerighty was asked about the references Massive Entertainment used for its latest open world.

The interviewer stated that playing Star Wars Outlaws reminded him of Red Dead Redemption, because of the Western film influences it has, but the director revealed that his biggest reference was Ghost of Tsushima.

It’s super interesting because my biggest reference was Ghost of Tsushima.

-Julian Gerighty

He further stated that Red Dead Redemption is phenomenal since its open world feels like a real world and not a checklist of things that are often repeated. The creative director further stated that he loved Ghost of Tsushima’s world for its purity of having a player fantasy.

This is the story, the world, the character, everything fits together with the gameplay guiding everything.

-Julian Gerighty

Julian stated that the fantasy of being a samurai ninja in Japan was great and that was one of the guiding lights for Star Wars Outlaws.
