- Expedition 33 is now the title with the most Game of the Year awards of all time.
- It has surpassed The Last of Us Part 2 and Elden Ring to take the first spot.
- The title has been universally praised for its excellent story, characters, and more.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has its shortcomings, but most will agree that it is a near-perfect game, especially considering its scale and the small team of developers. The game has now made history, cementing its place amongst the greatest.
Expedition 33 has finally overtaken Elden Ring for the most game of the year award wins in history. Elden Ring sits at 435, while Sandfall’s RPG now has 436, and it is on track to win even more based on nominations at other events, too.
Why it matters: When the game was first revealed, no one anticipated that it would be this huge. There was promise considering it was led by former Ubisoft employees, but not even the studio itself saw it becoming this successful.

A ResetEra thread has a very handy compilation that tracks all the game of the year awards won by different games over the years. Expedition 33 now towers above all with a whopping 436 award wins.
The top 3 standings now are:
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – 436 Awards
- Elden Ring – 435 Awards
- The Last of Us Part 2 – 326 Awards

The RPG was reportedly made with a budget of under $10 million and a team of just about 30 people. What Sandfall managed to deliver with a not-so-high budget and a relatively small team is truly amazing and appreciable.
The game has had controversies, especially because of its initial use of undisclosed AI, but Sandfall later cleared the air. Nonetheless, Expedition 33 will now be remembered for years to come and has put Sandfall on the gaming map.
