'The Current Team Aligns With Our Needs'

Story Highlight
  • CDPR recently revealed that 400 developers are working on The Witcher 4, while only 64 are handling the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.
  • The developers confirm that they will double the number of developers on Project Orion by next year, hinting at a 2028-29 release window.
  • So, there will be 128 developers on the project next year to increase development speed.

While Cyberpunk 2077 had a rocky launch, it is now one of the best games the gaming industry has to offer. Many fans agree that it could have won GOTY in this condition and that by no means is a reach.

The game has sold over 30 million copies, and its DLC has sold over 8M. This is a huge milestone for a game that was almost unplayable on launch. That said, its sequel is still in early production, as only 64 developers are working on it right now.

However, this will change next year as it will double the developer count to expedite development

Why it matters: The Cyberpunk 2077 launch is a mistake CDPR would never want to make again, so the developer should allocate some of its best to its sequel.

In a recent CDPR earnings conference, one of the investors asked whether the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel‘s lower headcount was a concern. To this, the vice president of investor relations, Karolina Gnas, simply replied ‘no’ and explained how the current team size aligns with their needs

The current team size aligns with our needs, and we plan to further expand the size of the team next year. We actually plan to double the team by the end of the next year.

The Witcher 4, said to be the most advanced CDPR game, has 400 developers working on it as it enters full-scale production. Meanwhile, the Cybperunk 2077 sequel has only 64 developers working on it.

That will change next year as CDPR aims to double the team, meaning there will be 128 developers working on Project Orion in 2025. While this will expedite the launch, the game will still take years to be released.
