Changed Story and Protagonist, Toxic Work Culture, And More!

Story Highlight
  • Anonymous Crimson Desert devs have revealed the reason behind the game’s issues.
  • They say the studio had a toxic environment, which led to troubled development.
  • The story was decided just before the launch, and too many features were crammed.

Crimson Desert released just a couple of days ago and has already sold 2 million copies. The game had a gargantuan hype supporting its cause; unfortunately, there are many glaring issues that stop it from reaching its max potential.

The reviews are mixed, led by a weak story, overwhelming mechanics, and some other issues. Now, alleged anonymous Crimson Developers have revealed that the game went through problematic development

Why it matters: If this is indeed true, this explains why, in trying to do so much, the title loses some of its identity. We previously also discussed that the RPG might just be too ambitious for its own good

Anonymous devs reveal problems during Crimson Desert’s development

On Blind, a Gaming Industry Lounge, where only verified developers post, 2 different posts were spotted (via Reddit) revealing toxic culture at Pearl Abyss and how it affected the development of Crimson Desert.

The first post highlights one of the biggest downsides of the game: its story. It says that the story was only decided close to the release. Previously, it was about a mercenary group with a completely different protagonist.

Additionally, the developers called out Pearl Abyss’s leadership. They stated that they were too stubborn and left no room for creative freedom, and the developers weren’t allowed to question anything they wanted to do.

They took inspiration from too many other games, so it became a “hodgepodge of features crammed together.” This is big if true, and could hurt the studio even more after its stocks previously fell by 30% following the mixed reviews.
