Monkey King Finally Claims His Throne!

Story Highlight
  • Game Science’s debut AAA title, Black Myth: Wukong wins Steam’s Game of the Year award for 2024.
  • Player reception on Steam has been overwhelmingly positive, with a 96% positive rating from 800,000 reviews.
  • Game Science is reportedly already working on multiple DLCs for the game.

Black Myth: Wukong has won Steam’s Game of the Year for 2024. The game has been a massive success for Game Science and it’s impressive considering it was the studio’s first ever AAA title.

After it failed to snag the GOTY at The Game Awards, Black Myth: Wukong finally gets the award it deserves. The game beat the likes of Stalker 2, Helldivers 2, Balatro, and Space Marine 2 to claim the award.

Why it matters: Black Myth: Wukong winning Steam’s Game of the Year should inspire Chinese developers to create more outstanding games.

Wukong’s redemption arc is complete as it grabs Steam’s Game of the Year award.

The game’s success is clear from its strong sales numbers. In its first month, Black Myth: Wukong sold over 20 million copies, earning more than $1 billion in revenue on Steam alone.

This makes it one of the fastest-selling games ever, beating out titles like Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077 in initial sales. Moreover, the game has over 800K reviews on Steam with 96% of them being overwhelmingly positive.

However, despite its commercial success and positive user reviews, Black Myth: Wukong was unexpectedly overlooked at The Game Awards 2024. It’s important to note that The Game Awards give most of the voting power to critics, with 90% of the votes coming from “game journalists” and just 10% from the public.

In contrast, the Steam Awards are decided solely by player votes, showing what the gaming community truly enjoys without any industry bias. Black Myth: Wukong being named Steam’s Game of the Year shows how much players connect with the game and shows the difference between critics’ opinions and what players actually appreciate.

The game received mixed reviews from critics. IGN gave it an 8 out of 10, appreciating its combat and boss design but pointing out technical issues. On the other hand, ScreenRant gave it 6/10, mainly because it lacked “inclusivity and diversity.”

Regardless, Black Myth: Wukong broke records on different gaming platforms. In August 2024, it became the most downloaded PlayStation 5 game in North America, Europe, and Japan. On Steam, it hit over 2.4 million players at once shortly after launch, breaking records for single-player games on the platform.

Looking ahead, Game Science has expressed intentions to expand the Black Myth universe. The studio’s official FAQ page already confirmed Black Myth: Wukong will get multiple DLCs down the line.
