BioShock 4 Developer Cloud Chamber Hit With Layoffs as Former Diablo Boss Named Studio Head

Over a Decade in Development, Yet Still Facing Hurdles!

Story Highlight
  • Cloud Chamber, the studio behind BioShock 4’s development, has been hit with an unspecified number of layoffs.
  • Former Diablo boss Rod Fergusson has taken over as the studio head.
  • Fergusson previously helped save BioShock Infinite’s development, and 2k hopes he works his magic once again.

Despite many fans thinking that 2k has abandoned the BioShock franchise, the publisher has been working on a new entry for more than a decade.

That is, BioShock 4’s development hasn’t been going smoothly. As per Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, the studio behind the game Cloud Chamber has been hit with an unknown number of layoffs, with former Diablo boss Rod Fergusson now appointed as studio head.

Why it matters: Given the game’s nearly extensive development timeline, layoffs and the subsequent change in studio leadership this late are concerning. Still, 2 K is persistent in making a BioShock 4 and hasn’t canceled the game, which may be reassuring for fans.

Just like BioShock 4, BioShock Infinite went through a similar troubled development process. 2k brought Rod Fergusson on board back then, too, who helped salvage the game’s production.

Fergusson helped save BioShock Infinite, and 2k is hoping that he saves BioSshock 4, too.

Recently, after former Cloud Chamber studio head Kelley Gilmore was fired, 2K executives informed the studio that it needed to become more agile and efficient to avoid layoffs. This news came right after the game failed an internal review at 2k, prompting the executives to make this change.

During the same time, a BioShock 1 remake was also canceled. Currently, the version of BioShock 4 under development started in 2019, right after the Cloud Chamber studio was formed.

Given the significant changes still underway after years of development, BioShock 4 may be years away from release. At this point, the game could very well be a next-gen release, as the chances of releasing for the current consoles are quite slim.
