- Battlefield 6 promises to deliver on both multiplayer and single-player gameplay.
- First impressions of the single-player campaign, however, are far from impressive.
- The single-player component is said to be unpolished and uninspired.
Battlefield 6 is less than two full weeks away from release, and the title is shaping up to be among the best modern renditions of the franchise. In addition to explosive multiplayer that fans already tested in the beta, Dice is also promising an exciting single-player campaign.
However, first impressions of the campaign have not lived up to the rest of Battlefield 6. In fact, it is said that this part of the game is quite underwhelming.
Why it matters: Battlefield’s single-player component has always been hit or miss. While the stories from the Bad Company games were always well-received, others like Battlefield 4 were not nearly as impressive.
According to BigFryTv, the press and content creators were recently given the chance to play three Battlefield 6 campaign missions.
The YouTuber reported that his first hands-on with the narrative left him feeling underwhelmed. He pointed to a distinct lack of polish within the missions while criticizing the overall uninspired nature of the gameplay.
For instance, one mission was clearly copied from Modern Warfare’s Clean House mission from 2019. Elsewhere, the YouTuber pointed to the prevalence of cinematic-style missions consisting of on-rails segments.
These comparisons suggest that Battlefield took major inspiration from Call of Duty, but BigFryTv says that the overall quality was nowhere close to that of Call of Duty’s usual offering.
He also pointed to dated animations and character models ruining the overall immersion. Essentially, Battlefield 6’s campaign feels like an afterthought compared to the other parts of the game.
Tom Henderson shared similar impressions, stating that the single-player could hold Dice’s latest release back from truly solid review scores.
Unfortunately, with the game’s release just over a week away, there isn’t much Dice and its partner teams can do about the campaign. At best, the studio can hope to see players warming up to the single-player component after experiencing the story in its entirety.
For now, the game appears to be doing a lot better than Battlefield 2042 and the upcoming Black Ops 7.
