Avowed’s recent previews have been quite encouraging, but they confirmed the inclusion of pronouns in the game’s fantasy world. Following this discovery, many gamers have criticized Obsidian Entertainment for including pronouns in a fantasy setting.

Elon Musk has also joined the discussion, stating that including pronouns is unacceptable. Amid the chaos, Avowed’s Art Director has addressed the controversy, using harsh words for gamers raising their voices.

Why it matters: The focus on diversity has grown in the industry recently, leading to fans speaking out against an excessive focus on such elements.

Avowed Art Director Made A Controversial Statement via Bluesky

Matt Hansen is currently working on Avowed as part of Obsidian Entertainment, and the developer has recently found himself in hot water after an interesting interaction on Bluesky.

Following discourse over Avowed’s pronouns, he pointed to an image of former Blizzard developer Mark Kern and Elon Musk, dubbing the image “Sickos.jpg.” This was followed by additional criticism of Elon Musk, where the developer claimed to have wanted to make Elon Musk mad with his work on the RPG.

The developer’s thread on Bluesky saw mixed replies, with many criticizing his statement. Many also disapproved of the fact that Matt Hansen appears to be dubbing all those against forced DEI in gaming sickos.

Avowed Is Heading To Game Pass In 2025

This is not the first time a developer has clashed with fans. In the past, games like Concord saw discourse growing between developers and gamers, and this seems to be yet another instance of such a conflict.

This controversy aside, Avowed is shaping up to be a solid RPG from Obsidian Entertainment. The team also feels confident in its work despite sharing the limelight with other major titles like Assassin’s Creed Shadows next year.
