Story Highlight
  • Reviews for the ROG Xbox Ally X are pretty promising despite the earlier controversies.
  • They’re praising the strong hardware, which is capable of running almost all games.
  • The device is ergonomically great, akin to an Xbox controller, and offers a proper console experience despite being a Windows PC at its core.

Microsoft has finally entered the handheld PC market with the ROG Xbox Ally X, made in collaboration with ASUS. With a launch set for tomorrow on 16th October, reviews for the OEM have started pouring in, and it seems like the ROG Xbox Ally X might already be a success.

Most reviews have been praising the device for its console-like experience despite being a small-factor PC. Furthermore, the OEM’s hardware capabilities are also strong, being able to run all AAA games.

Why it matters: Many were doubting Xbox’s move to enter the handheld market. The ROG Xbox Ally X is proving that the gaming giant still hasn’t lost its touch entirely, and this might be the first of many steps they need to bounce back.

Here are some review scores the ROG Xbox Ally X has received from media outlets.

  • IGN 9/10
  • XboxEra 9/10
  • VGC 4/5
  • Windows Central 4.5/5
  • Nexus Hub 9/10

To begin, the ROG Xbox Ally X has everything one would ever need in a handheld PC and beyond, but that makes sense considering the $1000 price tag. The device is equipped with a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chipset, 24GB LPDDR5X memory, and a 120Hz 1080p LCD display.

These are some beefy specs for such a small factor console. As such, the ROG Xbox Ally X  is able to run all games thrown at it on 60FPS without compromising too much of the visual settings.

That is, the handheld lasts more than 2 hours, even when playing AAA titles.

Moving onto the device itself, the feel is described as similar to the Xbox Series controllers, and the ergonomics are quite user-friendly.

Microsoft’s touch for the handheld with UI is the main topic of discussion here. Their attempt to bridge the console and PC experience has been highly successful, to say the least.

The design and convenience are phenomenal, and despite there being different sections for Xbox Games, Steam Games, and others, everything is at hand and easy to access.

At the core, the handheld does run Windows 11 as the main OS, so you can turn it into a PC when needed.

The only downsides might be the price, but you’re getting what you’re paying for at this premium tag. Other than that, the new interface and Windows 11 might have bugs, but that will be fixed over time.
