"Players Today Have A Backlog of Games They Can't Complete!"

Story Highlight
  • Astro Bot won the GOTY Award last year.
  • The game’s director believes that developers should create more small games.
  • He further stated that players already have a huge backlog of games.

Astro Bot was among the biggest titles released last year. The game dominated, winning over 90 awards and even the GOTY Award.

While the title proved that developers should make smaller games again, the Astro Bot director recently stated that there should be more small games as players already have a backlog.

Why it matters: Even though players have a huge backlog of titles and prefer smaller games, major developers are still focused on developing massive titles.

As reported by GamesRadar+, during the Game Developers Conference, the head of Team Asobi, Nicolas Doucet, stated that the goal to make Astro Bot was to develop a title that could be finished in a reasonable time.

From the start, we were in the mindset that it’s OK to make a compact game … it’s OK to make a small game

-Nicolas Doucet

He further stated that the decision to make Astro Bot a small game was not based on development, but the team was also aware that players have a backlog of games and cannot complete them.

Astro Bot Was The Biggest Release of Last Year

Therefore, it’s great that Team Asobi went for a small game that received such a great reception. It looks like the director is also in favor of it, as he believes more developers should try releasing smaller games.

It’s hard to tell what the gaming industry’s future holds. Some developers still take years to release a title, while titles like Astro Bot take less time to develop and offer a creative experience
