AMD FSR 4 Now Running on RDNA 3 and RTX 30 GPUs Thanks to INT8 Leak

Leaked Files Also Indicate Possible RDNA 2 Support!

Story Highlight
  • FSR 4 was released as an exclusive feature for RDNA 4 cards.
  • Leaked AMD FSR 4 files reveal compatibility with RX 7000, RDNA 2, and NVIDIA RTX 30 GPUs beyond the RX 9000 series.
  • Modders enabled FSR 4 on RDNA 3 GPU, showing improved image quality but some performance loss due to no official support.

AMD’s new FSR 4 upscaling technology was initially believed to be exclusive to the Radeon RX 9000 series. However, AMD accidentally included INT8 model files in the FSR 4 SDK release, files that were never meant to be public. These files are critical components of the new upscaler.

While FSR 4 was promoted as a feature limited to RDNA 4 GPUs, the leaked files have revealed that it also runs on Radeon RX 7000 (RDNA 3) graphics cards. Surprisingly, it doesn’t stop there; support has also been found for RDNA 2 GPUs (the RX 6000 series) and even NVIDIA’s RTX 30 series.

This broader compatibility is a major revelation, as it contradicts AMD’s initial positioning of FSR 4 as a next-gen exclusive.

Why it matters: This leak shows that AMD’s FSR 4 isn’t limited to the RX 9000 series as claimed. It can run on older AMD and even NVIDIA GPUs, opening the door for wider adoption and raising questions about artificial hardware restrictions.

FSR SDK leak contained FSR 4 files that work on practically any modern GP, including RDNA 3.

As AMD made the blunder, modders quickly picked up the leaked files and began testing them. On Reddit, one user shared that they compiled a DLL file, which made it possible to run FSR 4 by simply dropping and replacing a few files.

The user noted that enabling FSR 4 on an RDNA 3 GPU significantly improved image quality compared to FSR 3.1. However, there was a trade-off, a slight drop in performance.

They observed a loss of around 6 to 7 frames per second while using the RX 7900 XTX with ray tracing enabled at 1440p on maximum settings.

This performance dip is expected, as AMD has not officially optimised FSR 4 for previous-generation hardware. Until official support is released, performance on older GPUs may not be ideal.

It’s also worth noting that the leaked version indicates possible support for RDNA 2 cards. However, that may not be fully functional, as RDNA 2 lacks WMMA acceleration. In order for FSR 4 to work properly on these GPUs, a different version or workaround may be required.

Still, these files do not confirm whether AMD plans to officially support older GPUs. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below, or join the official Tech4Gamers forums to continue the discussion.
