Remedy has always been phenomenal with its storytelling, whether it be Control or Max Payne. However, the studio has shattered expectations with Alan Wake 2 in 2023.
The game’s striking visuals and atmospheric approach to survival horror have redefined the genre and impressed the critics, making it the most nominated title at The Game Awards 2023.
While the competition for Game of the Year at The Game Awards is yet to begin, Alan Wake 2 has already been crowned the best game of 2023 by the Times.
Why it matters: This achievement is impressive since 2023 is far from a weak year for gaming. With titles like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Spider-Man 2, Remedy’s latest horror adventure faced unrelenting competition to earn the top spot.
The Times’ list includes the usual favorites for Game of the Year. Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Resident Evil 4, and more are high up on the list, but Alan Wake 2 has prevailed.
While the game is currently considered an underdog in this race at The Game Awards, Remedy’s work continues to receive praise from the masses. Therefore, fans of this title are hopeful for a similar result at The Game Awards.
What’s interesting is that the Times has rated the blockbuster RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 lower than Alan Wake 2. This result is far from expected, but it highlights the incredible talent of the developers at Remedy Entertainment.
The game was also quite popular in the Players’ Choice category at The Game Awards. This award is entirely fan-voted, and while Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently the leader, Alan Wake 2 was among the top 10 titles in the first round.
In the past, the Times rated the original Alan Wake as the best game of 2010. As such, it appears the sequel has lived up to this bar.
We believe there’s no doubt that the game is worthy of awards like Game of the Year. It nails every element needed for a good horror game, creating a memorable narrative that players will likely remember for many years.
The addition of Saga Anderson is also a welcome change of pace, making this journey quite complex and distinct compared to other horror games.
Still, it remains to be seen if the game will be able to come out on top on the big stage of The Game Awards. This event is mere days away, and Alan Wake 2 is certainly one of the more promising Game of the Year contenders.
