Xbox Devs Are Free To Use AI As They See Fit!

Story Highlight
  • The new Xbox CEO does not intend to push AI slop in games despite her artificial intelligence background.
  • Xbox’s new leadership notes that AI will be used as an additive tool by game developers for tasks like coding and bug testing.
  • They also say that Microsoft does not force any of its studios to use AI for game development.

Following the arrival of new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, the gaming brand is set to go through plenty of changes.

However, as the new leadership puts it, one thing that will seemingly remain unchanged is Microsoft’s commitment to producing games with human creativity at the forefront. In a new interview, the CEO once again clarified her stance on AI and its use for game development.

Why it matters: The new Xbox CEO comes from an AI background, which sparked concerns over Microsoft accelerating the push for artificial intelligence integration in games.

Matt Booty And Phil Spencer Took To The Stage To Welcome Asha Sharma As The New CEO

Discussing the subject with Windows Central, Sharma noted that she has no intentions of flooding Xbox with “AI slop.”

Reaffirming this stance, Xbox CCO Matt Booty used Photoshop as an example of a tool the games industry widely adopted soon after its release. He argued that AI would be similarly additive to game development at Microsoft moving forward.

Matt Booty also confirmed that Microsoft does not force its studios to use the technology. Ultimately, the choice of whether to use any new technology or not is up to the developers.

Booty noted that the developers are free to use AI to write code or check for bugs, but Microsoft prioritizes the creative process above everything else.

We’ve got no pressure from Microsoft, there are no directives on AI coming down.

What makes these statements so interesting is the fact that Microsoft appears to be taking the opposite approach with Windows, pushing AI elements like Copilot heavily for all users.
