Xbox is planning to start off 2026 with a banger. Forza Horizon 6 takes players to Japan, a highly requested location for fans since the series began in 2012.
The latest Xbox Developer Direct offers a deep dive into the next iteration of the Forza Horizon series. The Japanese setting looks amazing, and it seems like developer Playground Games may have outdone themselves.
Why it matters: Forza Horizon is the most consistent Xbox first-party IP, and it’s only right that they maintain their high-quality throughout future entries too.
Playground Games has interviewed members of Japan’s car culture to ensure an accurate representation of racing in Japan. There will be 3 car meet locations in the game inspired by the real-life Daikoku car meet, reflecting its focus on representing Japan’s actual car culture
The studio has also expanded the urban part of the open world with a greater emphasis, also making Tokyo 5X larger than any other city in Forza Horizon. Moreover, the city also looks far better populated than it did in the past. The new seasonal changes also give the Japanese open world a fresh new look each time.
In terms of gameplay , Forza Horizon 6 carries on the Wristband Progression system from past entries. As players progress, they gain access to higher-tier wrist bands, which help them advance in the career mode and eventually unlock Horizon Rush, a game mode where they can showcase their driving skills.

Forza Horizon 6 is set to feature 550 cars at launch, which is the biggest number ever in the series. There will be 8 player bases across Japan’s map, used for car showcases, fast travel, and other purposes.
In addition to that, an Estate Base is also present in the game, a wide rural open area that can be customized by players, where they can build garages, tracks, and other elements.
Forza Horizon 6 launches on May 19th for Xbox and PC players, with 4 days of early access for those with the premium edition of the game. A PS5 release is also planned for sometime later in 2026, and Playground Games is still working on the port.
