Job Listing Confirms Sony’s Live-Service Title Fairgames Is Powered by Unreal Engine 5

Development For Sony's Upcoming Live-Service Title Has Been Troublesome So Far!

Story Highlight
  • Tech4Gamers has found that Fairgames, Sony’s next live-service title, is powered by Unreal Engine 5.
  • The game is already going through a rough development after poor first impressions.
  • Recently, the director also departed, leaving the title’s future in doubt.

Coming from 8 cancelled live-service releases out of the planned 12 total ones, Sony still isn’t ready to abandon this bandwagon that sailed away long ago. Going into 2026, they plan to release Fairgames (styled Fairgame$), a live-service title described as a blend of extraction shooter and battle royale genres.

While not much is known about the title officially, Tech4Gamers has come across one job listing from SIE revealing that Fairgames is being powered by Unreal Engine 5. This is a shock, since Sony has quite a few proprietary engines that could’ve been better to use for this game.

Why it matters: Unreal Engine 5 has a bad rep in the gaming industry due to performance-intensive features, and the fact that it’s being used for a live-service game seems like a recipe for disaster.

Details On Sony’s Upcoming Fairgames

SIE is looking to hire an experienced Online Programmer for Haven Entertainment Studios, the developer behind Fairgames. In the ‘Experience and skills required section,’ they’ve mentioned expertise required in Unreal Engine as a plus.

Be proficient in C++ programming, experience with Unreal Engine is a plus.

While the specific version of Unreal Engine hasn’t been mentioned, Haven Studios was formed in 2021, the same year early access to Unreal Engine 5 began. Therefore, it’s pretty obvious that Fairgames will be powered by Unreal Engine 5.

Regarding other updates on the project, Fairgames is going through a rough patch as the development faced a setback following the departure of its director. Things were so bad that rumors began circulating that the project was canceled altogether; however, that wasn’t true.

Decima Engine Could Be A Proper Rival To Unreal Engine 5

At this stage, it’s pretty clear that PlayStation isn’t built to walk the live-service path, as its last release, Concord, was also built on Unreal Engine 5. The game was such a disaster that Sony had to pull the plug on it.
