Xbox And Hideo Kojima Are Still On The Same Page!

Story Highlight
  • Hideo Kojima’s OD is getting extensive technical and gameplay support from Xbox, says Phil Spencer.
  • The gaming giant is helping Kojima Productions utilize Unreal Engine 5 for the game.
  • The Xbox chief expressed satisfaction with the title so far, but revealed there is no release date in sight yet.

Hideo Kojima’s mysterious OD revealed its true colors last month, showcasing a haunting trailer starring Sophia Lillis at the 10th Anniversary event for Kojima Productions. The horror title is being teased as an anthology project with directors like Jordan Peele also involved.

As OD is a partnership between the Japanese auteur and Xbox, the gaming giant will publish the game, and, according to Phil Spencer, it is providing more than just financial support.

Why it matters: Xbox’s more hands-on approach to gameplay support for first-party AAA titles is a much-needed change for the company.

While talking to Famitsu, the CEO stated that Xbox Game Studios is helping Hideo Kojima develop OD by working on the gameplay and technical aspects of the horror title.

Kojima Productions and Xbox Game Studios are working closely together on both gameplay and technology.

Phil Spencer expanded on his stance by revealing that support for first-party titles varies from game to game. And for OD, Xbox is assisting Kojima Productions with the implementation of Unreal Engine 5, as they have knowledge and experience with it.

Spencer also stated that the legendary director told him he wants to make “a really scary game.” Overall, the Xbox CEO expressed satisfaction with the project so far, praising the high quality of the trailer he saw at the Kojima Productions anniversary.

A release date for OD, however, isn’t certain yet, as development was delayed by the Screen Actors Guild strike in 2023. But Phil Spencer assured that both parties are working closely on production and work is in full flow, even if a specific date hasn’t been locked in.

Xbox has been criticized for not participating in the development of its first-party productions, with AMD engineers also criticizing the lack of technical support. Hence, it’s nice to see the gaming giant being more hands-on in backing Kojima’s OD.
