- Hokkaido’s harsh landscape promises a fresh, open world experience.
- Atsu’s story must try to deliver more than a mere vengeance plot.
- Sidequests and exploration must feel meaningful and not repetitive.
- Ghost of Yotei has the potential to surpass Ghost of Tsushima as a defining samurai game.
When Ghost of Yotei was announced by Sucker Punch Studios it instantly became a hot topic in the gaming industry. After the success of the previous game, expectations are high for the new entry to the series, being the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima and all.
Previously, developers proved they could blend history with beautifully crafted game dynamics and storytelling. Now with a new title featuring a new protagonist and a new setting, Ghost of Yotei has the potential to take the series to new heights.
A Better Storyline
Ghost of Yotei is a story based on vengeance. Atsu, the female protagonist, returns home and finds her whole family massacred by a band of powerful outlaws called the Yotei Six. Seen from the surface, this seems like a typical revenge plot. But I want the story to be more emotionally complex and Atsu to feel what the cost of having revenge means.
In Ghost of Tsushima, Jin Sakai’s story felt powerful because it was not only about defeating enemies. The game was all about the protagonist fighting his own identity. Atsu’s story should feel similar and should encompass feelings of guilt, trauma, and success.
New Setting
Setting the game in Ezo, which is now modern-day Hokkaido, allows for Sucker Punch to create a new environment both fresh and memorable. Unlike the shores and green fields of Tushima, Hokkaido offers a harsher, more rugged environment with wilder landscapes and an unpredictable climate.
Ghost of Yotei should try to be more dynamic and interactive. Imagine the game having wildlife roaming around, foggy mountains, and birds chirping in the background or crickets at night. These small environmental details could make the player feel as if they are living the game and themselves are Atsu. The developers have promised stunning action-packed gameplay, so let’s just hope they deliver.
Combat and Exploration
One of the best things about Ghost of Tsushima was its combat system, which did not risk becoming predictable over time. Considering a run time of many hours, the combat in Ghost of Yotei should not feel repetitive but have more variety and ways to approach a fight. New weapons such as dual blades and spears have already been confirmed, and I hope each weapon delivers a unique and distinct playstyle.
Combat should also feel more fluid and adaptable. Also, stealth should be more integrated into the gameplay, but with more takedown options using different gadgets and environmental traps.
Apart from combat, Ghost of Yotei promises freedom of exploration. The game allows the player to decide which of the Yotei Six to pursue first. This non-linear gameplay is exciting as it allows us, as the players, to dictate how the story unfolds. Now, all of this should also come with issues such as increased difficulty when pursuing one enemy first, and should affect the dialogue and the world’s view of Atsu as well.
Making Use of Tech and Cinematography
Ghost of Yotei is designed exclusively for the PS5 and thus, I expect the technical experience to be seamless. The game should have fast loading times, stable performance, and stunning visuals. But one thing we all love more than sheer power is great immersion in the game
Ghost of Tsushima made use of something called Kurosawa mode, which made the game look more cinematic. In Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch is going a step further by giving multiple options, which include Miike Mode and Watanabe Mode. I expect these features to not only act as filters but to deliver a full cinematic experience.
The game developers should also try making use of Nvidia’s DLSS AI upscaling technology. This will help boost the visual quality of the game even more, delivering an experience that will linger long after the game is over.
Final Thoughts
In the end, I will say that considering how peak Ghost of Tsushima was, I am expecting a lot from Ghost of Yotei. Regardless, if Sucker Punch can manage to bring all of these elements together, we will have a masterpiece in our hands. The game won’t only be a worthy successor to Ghost of Tsushima, but will be a spectacle in its own right.
With the release date closing in on us all, we can do nothing but wait and hope that the developers will deliver an experience better than anything we have seen so far from them.
